Project: Spotify in Space (2020)
Position: Director, Influence & Communications, 2 Degrees
Role: Project Lead
In honor of Women's History Month in 2020, I was tasked with finding a culturally significant and unique event for Spotify to participate in. Upon learning of an upcoming historic all-female spacewalk, I reached out to NASA and proposed a unique collaboration. The astronauts (including the renowned Christina Koch) would be equipped with Spotify in space, offering a glimpse into their musical preferences during their missions.
The highlight of the project involved assisting astronauts in setting up their own Spotify accounts and creating personalised playlists aboard the International Space Station. This not only provided astronauts with a comforting connection to Earth through music but also captivated a global audience by sharing these playlists publicly. My responsibilities extended to close coordination with NASA and Spotify's technical teams to ensure uninterrupted access to Spotify in space. The initiative also produced some remarkable photographs (see below), including one shot of Spotify on an iPad floating above Planet Earth.
Unfortunately, in March 2020, the project coincided with the onset of the first global lockdown, and Spotify entered a media blackout. Consequently, our incredible story was only shared through Spotify's consumer news channel, "For the Record."
